Horses help people and make us feel better. We know through scientific research, such as the research from Dr. Gehrke, that horses benefit humans in many ways. They can make us feel better. They can lower our stress levels and can provide us with a greater sense of wellbeing. They can help us be more connected with nature and lift our spirits.
Although at 10th Mountain Equine we do not provide psychotherapy, the people at 10thMountain Equine have experience with numerous activities that have helped many people. Veterans have found our horses to be helpful when they are struggling with the stress and trauma of prior combat. Families going through difficult times have used our horses to help their healing process. Business and government executives have also found our horse activities to be very helpful. We can assist anyone to use horses to achieve better mindfulness.
Give us a call and visit our wonderful horses. You will be amazed at how a few of our activities will make you feel.

Dr. Ellen Gehrke, our Director of Research and Education, is a professor at National University and a leading researcher in Equine Assisted Therapy. She has been instrumental in establishing Equine Therapy as a proven and effective technique for treating trauma. Her ground breaking, evidence-based methods have produced objective data proving the effectiveness of Equine Activities as well as Equine Assisted Therapy and are published in peer reviewed academic publications. Her current research not only explores the impact the equine has upon the human but also the impact humans have upon horses. Through exploring and understanding this dynamic, we are better able learn more advanced and effective therapeutic techniques.

Each year about 100,000 horses are destined for slaughter and thousands more are horribly abused. The lucky ones are rescued by a reputable horse rescue, the remainder die horrible deaths. Some of these rescued horses are very difficult to train and handle because it takes a lot of time, patience, and skill to earn their trust.
Some horse rescues, known as kill shelters, kill rescued horses if they are too difficult to train or not quickly adopted. We save horses and are NOT a kill shelter. At 10th Mountain Equine we believe that it’s not the horse’s fault that it is difficult to train and it doesn’t deserve to die because people abused it.
10th Mountain Equine is not a dedicated horse rescue but has worked with dedicated horse rescues to provide rescued horses with the best opportunity to find loving, safe and permanent homes. We train these rescued horses so that families can adopt a trained horse ready to be loved. It is much easier to find a good home for a trained horse than an untrained horse, so our horse trainers provide this necessary training that enable them to find a new home and family.
Additionally, 10th Mountain Equine is developing its facilities in Eagle, Colorado to train and place horses for adoption.
Every horse that is adopted by a loving home opens space for one more horse to be rescued. Unfortunately, we never lack for horses needing to be rescued, but we do lack sufficient funds and space to board and train them. The cost to board and train a horse at our ranch in Eagle is a minimum of $550.00 per month. Horses selected for training at 10th Mountain Equine in Eagle undergo an eight to twelve-week training program depending upon the horse’s needs. During the program, the rescued horse is cared for, loved, and trained. Through their training, the horses are transformed into quality horses ready for a forever home and a second chance at life.
Our goal is to train up to 20 horses per year at our ranch in Eagle, Colorado, and place up to eight rescue horses annually in new, loving adoptive homes. If you are interested in adopting a horse or sponsoring one, let us know!
